Math Glossary
A collection of common math terms used in elementary school. Use the search to find specific terms.
Addend
A number being added in an addition operation. In 3 + 5 = 8, both 3 and 5 are addends.
Difference
The result of a subtraction operation. In 8 - 3 = 5, the difference is 5.
Dividend
The number being divided in a division operation. In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, the dividend is 12.
Divisor
The number by which another number is divided. In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, the divisor is 3.
Equal (=)
A symbol showing that two values are the same.
Equation
A mathematical statement with an equal sign showing two expressions have the same value. Example: 2 + 3 = 5.
Factor
A number being multiplied in a multiplication operation. In 3 × 4 = 12, both 3 and 4 are factors.
Greater Than (>)
Shows that the number on the left is larger than the number on the right. Example: 5 > 3.
Less Than (<)
Shows that the number on the left is smaller than the number on the right. Example: 3 < 5.
Minuend
The number from which another number is subtracted. In 8 - 3 = 5, the minuend is 8.
Multiplicand
The number being multiplied in a multiplication operation. In 3 × 4 = 12, the multiplicand is 3.
Multiplier
The number by which another number is multiplied. In 3 × 4 = 12, the multiplier is 4.
Number Line
A straight line with numbers marked on it, used to show the size and order of numbers.
Product
The result of a multiplication operation. In 3 × 4 = 12, the product is 12.
Quotient
The result of a division operation. In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, the quotient is 4.
Remainder
The amount left over after division when numbers don't divide evenly. Example: 10 ÷ 3 = 3 remainder 1.
Subtrahend
The number being subtracted in a subtraction operation. In 8 - 3 = 5, the subtrahend is 3.
Sum
The result of an addition operation. In 3 + 5 = 8, the sum is 8.
